A double-hung window puts both sashes to work. Drop the top sash and rising warm air slips out near the ceiling; raise the bottom and the sea breeze rolls in at sitting height. Split them a few inches each and a room circulates on its own — useful ventilation in a climate where every degree matters. And when it is time to clean, both sashes tilt into the room, so second-story exterior glass gets wiped down from inside. No ladders, no leaning over a hedge.
