A wind-mitigation inspection is the report a Florida homeowner's insurer uses to decide which storm-resistance credits a house earns. One section is about roof shape and attachment. The one we care about is opening protection: every window, door, sliding door, garage door and skylight in the house, and what protects each one.
What the inspector is trying to prove
The inspector has to document that each glazed opening is protected by either an impact-rated product or an approved shutter, and they have to show evidence. On a window that evidence is the permanent manufacturer label on the frame, the product approval number on it, and, when they can get it, the closed permit on file with the building department. If they cannot find the label, the window is recorded as unknown, which usually means no credit for it.
Why one opening matters
The opening-protection rating is generally driven by the weakest opening. A house with impact windows everywhere and one unprotected glass door is typically rated on that door. Before an inspection, walk the house and list every opening, including the garage door and any skylights.
What to have ready in Fort Lauderdale
