Frameless shower doors in Miami Beach: hinged or bypass?

The two frameless styles we build for Miami Beach bathrooms, how to tell which one your opening wants, and the glass, thickness and hardware finish choices that come with it.

Every custom frameless shower we build in Miami Beach is one of two things: a frameless hinged door or a frameless bypass door. The choice is usually made for you by the bathroom. Here is how to read yours.

Hinged: the cleanest look

A hinged door is a single panel of tempered glass that pivots on hinges mounted to the wall or to a fixed panel beside it. It gives the most open look, the widest walk-in, and the fewest parts to maintain. It needs one thing: room to swing. If a vanity, a toilet or a door is inside the arc of the swing, hinged is out.

Bypass: for tight openings and tubs

A bypass door is two panels that slide past each other on a header. Nothing swings into the room, which is why it is the answer for tub enclosures, narrow bathrooms and any opening where a hinged door would hit something. Fully frameless bypass systems ride on quality finished rollers and a slim header, so it does not look like the framed sliders of the 1990s.

What Miami Beach bathrooms usually ask for

Miami Beach is condos and high-rises facing salt air and the highest wind-load zones in the county, plus Art Deco and MiMo buildings with strict exterior review. In practice that means primary baths tend to get a hinged door with a fixed panel or a full walk-in screen, and secondary baths and tub combos get bypass.

The three choices that come next

  • Glass. Clear, Ultra Clear (the industry name for low iron, which removes the green cast so white tile reads white) or Frosted for privacy.
  • Thickness. 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass, decided by panel size and door span at the measure.
  • Hardware finish. Quality finished hinges and clamps in Brushed Nickel, Matte Black, or Gold/Brass, brushed or polished.

No standard size kits

We do not sell kits. We field measure every opening, fabricate tempered glass to the exact measurement, set it plumb and seal it. Out-of-plumb walls, uneven curbs and odd angles are the normal condition of a real bathroom, and made-to-measure glass is how they get a tight, straight enclosure anyway.

Good to know

Questions we get about this.

A hinged door swings on wall- or panel-mounted hinges and needs swing room outside the shower. A bypass door has two panels that slide past each other on a header and swings into nothing, which suits tubs and tight bathrooms. Both are fully frameless.

Clear, Ultra Clear (low iron, no green tint) and Frosted, in 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass, on quality finished hinges and clamps in Brushed Nickel, Matte Black or Gold/Brass.
